SARA: Simple Accurate Regulatory Assistant
Ask questions about federal regulations and get answers tailored to your context.
What is SARA?
SARA is Ruleo's AI assistant for regulatory questions. It uses the document you're viewing (and any sections or chapters you add) as context so answers are accurate and cited. SARA is available in the Ruleo Sidekick (sidebar) on document pages and in full screen from the app.
Where to use SARA
- On a document page: Open any US Code, CFR, or Federal Register document. In the sidebar, open the SARA tab. Your question is answered using that document (and optionally the full chapter or part) as context.
- Full screen: Go to Ruleo → SARA (or the full-screen SARA link in the sidebar) to chat without a specific document. You can still add sections to context before asking.
Context and the document icon
Next to the SARA message input (in the sidebar and in full screen), you'll see a context circle, a document icon, and the word Context. You can click the circle, the icon, or the label to open the context panel and add or change what SARA uses as context.
How the context circle works
The context circle is a ring to the left of the document icon. It shows how much of the model's context window is filled by your current context (the document you're on, plus any sections, chapters, or parts you add).
- What it shows: The circle fills in proportion to tokens used vs. the model's token limit. Hover over it to see the exact numbers (e.g. "Context: 12,000 / 180,000 tokens").
- When it appears: In the sidebar it appears for Pro users next to the input. In full-screen SARA it appears above the input when you're signed in as Pro.
- On a document page: The value is based on the actual content of the current document and any sections you've added. Including the full chapter or part increases usage.
- When not on a document: (e.g. full-screen or general sidebar chat) you can still add sections to context. The circle then shows an estimate based on the number of sections you've added.
- Staying within limit: If the circle fills most of the way or turns orange/red, consider adding fewer sections or being more specific so SARA has room to respond well.
Using the context panel
Click the circle, document icon, or Context label to open the context panel. From there you can:
- Toggle Include entire chapter (US Code) or Include entire part (CFR) so SARA has the full chapter/part as context.
- Add more sections, chapters, or parts by typing a reference (e.g.
21 CFR § 101.36or21 USC § 343) and clicking Add. You can also Search by topic and tick which results to add to context. - When you're not on a document, the same panel lets you add specific sections or search and tick sections to include.
@ tagging
In the SARA message box, type @ to open a quick menu:
- Include full chapter/part — Toggle whether the entire chapter (US Code) or part (CFR) is used as context.
- Add section, chapter, or part… — Opens the same context panel as the document icon so you can add more sections to context.
Use @ when you want to add or adjust context without leaving the input.
How SARA responses look
SARA replies are formatted for readability:
- Headings, lists, and tables — Responses use structured markdown (headings, bullet and numbered lists, tables) so longer answers are easy to scan.
- Clickable citations — References like
21 CFR § 101.36or21 USC § 343in the text are turned into links to the corresponding Ruleo document page. Click any citation to open that section. - Section lists — When SARA returns a numbered list of regulatory sections (e.g. "Here are the sections we reviewed"), that list is shown as a block with links to each section on Ruleo so you can open them in one click.
Taking your context to full-screen SARA
In the sidebar SARA tab, next to the help icon you'll see an Open in full screen icon (expand/window). Click it to open full-screen SARA. Your current context (the document you're on plus any sections, chapters, or parts you added) is transferred automatically, so you can continue the conversation in full screen with the same context.
Tips
- For document-specific questions, open that document first so SARA has the right context.
- Add only the sections you need to avoid filling the context window; the context circle helps you see usage.
- SARA can ask clarifying questions before giving a final answer; you can refine your question in the same thread.
